Superior, Wisconsin, is where he hails from—superior, academically, is what he's hailed as. Worried none of the time, quiet most of the time, and practical all of the time, Bud's interests are quite varied, but he always enjoys athletics, and a good radio program. His general interest was in getting away from, rather than trying to beat, the system. Bud'll be there when it's "up anchor."

The Class of 1942 graduated on December 19, 1941, less than two weeks after the United States entered World War II. The class had previously been scheduled to graduate in February 1942.

Loss
Warren was lost on December 1, 1942 when USS Northampton (CA 26) was sunk by Japanese torpedoes during the Battle of Tassafaronga. He had reported aboard in February.

Warren attended Superior High School and was on the honor roll. In the 1937 yearbook, his caption was “True to his word, his work, and his friends.”
Warren was nominated to the Naval Academy by Representative B. J. Gehrmann, progressive, Wisconsin.
His father Leonard was a machinist for a steam railroad, mother Irene, sister Margret, and brother Gordon. His parents were born in Finland. His father came to the United States when he was 19; his mother came when she was 3 years old.
His father was listed as next of kin.
His memory marker is at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines.
Namesake
USS Engstrom (DE 50) was named for Warren.
