Harry was lost on November 19, 1917 when USS Chauncey (Destroyer No. 3) collided and sank with a British merchant steamer it was escorting west of Gibraltar.

He was survived by his parents and two sisters.

Memorial Hall Error

Harry is listed on the killed in action panel at the front of Memorial Hall. His loss is more accurately characterized as operational, though, as there were no enemy forces in the area.

Harry is also listed with his classmates as "USN;" he is listed as a member of the "United States Naval Reserve Force" in the Register of Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps of 1918.
