Knowlton was lost when USS Juneau (CL 52) was sunk at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. He was the ship's damage control officer.

His wife was listed as next of kin.

Career

He was commanding officer of USS Grebe (AM 43) from 19 March 1934 - 25 March 1935.
