Kenneth was lost when USS Edsall (DD 219) was sunk on on March 1, 1942 by Japanese surface and air forces. He was the ship's communications officer.

His parents were listed as next of kin. His father, LCDR Morris Davies Gilmore, '11, was a recipient of the Navy Cross, the Mexican Service Medal, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, and the Victory Medal. Morris was also survived by a sister, Alia Elisabeth Gilmore, who served in the WAVES during the war. His uncle, CDR Walter William Gilmore, serving as supply officer at the time, was killed in action on the USS Lexington.

All references to Morris list him as a Jr., except on the Class of 1939 plaque in Memorial Hall. (Killed in action scroll in front of Memorial Hall is correct.)
