Killed in the crash of a Navy PBY Catalina "Flying Boat" that struck a fog shrouded hillside close to the Golden Gate bridge, near Sausalito, California. Eight other crewmembers also perished.

Norman was executive officer of Patrol Bombing Squadron (VPB) 84.
