Life & Loss

Jerry was lost March 16, 1981 while operating from USS America (CVA 66). He was a member of Air Anti-Submarine Squadron (VS) 33.

From the June 1981 issue of Shipmate:

Cdr. Gerald William Jenkins USN was killed in an accident aboard USS AMERICA (CV-66) on 16 March 1981. Memorial services were held at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at Point Loma in San Diego after services at the naval chapel. Naval Air Station, North Island.

Appointed to the Naval Academy from the State of Michigan, he was graduated with the Class of 1969. Flight training followed and he was designated naval aviator in 1971. He also completed work for a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Systems at the University of West Florida at this time, then reported as a flight instructor at Corpus Christi in 1973. He later had duty with Antisubmarine Squadron 4- 1 at North Island, flying as a fleet replacement pilot in the first of the S-3A Vikings. Other service included assignments to Antisubmarine Squadron 2-1 during which he deployed on board USS JOHN F. KENNEDY, followed by duty as aide to Commander Naval Air Test Center, Naval Air Station, Patuxtent River, Maryland. He also had a tour at the Naval War College, and he reported to Antisubmarine Squadron 3- 3 in March 1980.

He is survived by his widow Elizabeth of Coronado, Califomia; a daughter; his parents; a sister and two brothers.
