REAMOR E. DELABARRE, LTJG, USN
Reamor Delabarre '27
Date of birth: January 3, 1906
Date of death: November 4, 1938
From the 1927 Lucky Bag:
Life & Loss
Unable to find many details about Reamor's life or loss. The January 1939 edition of SHIPMATE gives his date of death as November 1, 1938, aboard USS Oahu (PR 6) at Shanghai, China. The Register of Alumni gives the same date.
The 1937 Navy Directory lists him as a LTjg with the Yangtze Patrol, USS Luzon (PR 7). The 1938 edition omits mention of the patrol and only has USS Oahu (PR 6); he was the gunnery officer.
From Find A Grave:
Graduated and Commissioned a Lieutenant Junior Grade from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Class of 1927.
Lt. DeLaBarre was killed in action in the waters off of the China coast. He was buried at sea. The memorial monument is in place at the Arlington National Cemetery.
At least part of this account is inaccurate; the gunboats of the patrol were built in China and only made a single ocean voyage, when the squadron sailed for Manila in late 1941, shortly before the war started. Unable to find any mention of any gunboat involved in hostilities in 1938. Reamor is not listed on the killed in action panel in Memorial Hall.
He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Spelling of Last Name
Though it occurs variously with and without spaces, believe that Memorial Hall's no-spaces spelling is most correct. It appears this way ("DeLaBarre") on his headstone, and the headstones of several of his family.
