RUPERT M. BURSTAN, CAPT, USMC

From USNA Virtual Memorial Hall

Rupert Burstan '15

Date of birth: April 1, 1894

Date of death: September 19, 1918

Age: 24

Lucky Bag

From the 1915 Lucky Bag:

Loss

Rupert was lost on September 19, 1918 when he died of pneumonia in a hospital in France. He was "in command of a force of 1,100 fighting Marines."

Unable to determine which unit he was commanding; the 1918 Navy Directory lists him aboard the battleship USS North Carolina.

He is buried in Pennsylvania.

Memorial Hall Error

Some contemporary reports have him as a Major. (Register of Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps of 1919 has Captain.) Posthumous promotion?

While death from illness is not normally considered an operational loss, believe that conditions on the Western Front in WWI likely justify the characterization.

Class of 1915

Rupert is one of 18 members of the Class of 1915 in Memorial Hall.
