From USNA Virtual Memorial Hall

Typhoon Cobra struck the Third Fleet on December 18, 1944. Three destroyers capsized and sank, and 790 lives were lost. Nine other warships were damaged, and over 100 aircraft were wrecked or washed overboard; the aircraft carrier Monterey was forced to battle a serious fire that was caused by a plane hitting a bulkhead.

The actions of the men and their ships are extensively chronicled in several books, including the excellent "Down to the Sea: An Epic Story of Naval Disaster and Heroism in World War II" by Bruce Henderson.
