Vernon was lost on November 23, 1937 when his plane crashed at Ocatilla Airport, California.

The Navy Directory of 1937 lists him as a member of Bombing Squadron (VB) 3B, aboard USS Lexington (CV 2), though he he is not listed (in "Wings of Gold") as being a naval aviator.

He has a memory marker in Ohio; he is buried in California. He was survived by his parents and three brothers.
